Daily Itinerary

Activities, adventures, and historic towns for the whole family

Sat 28 — Sun 29 March
Pre-trip · Ashbourne, Derbyshire
FRIENDS & FAMILY
  • 🏠
Stay with Becky & Greg in Ashbourne Relaxed weekend with friends before the holiday kicks off. Ashbourne is a lovely market town with great pubs, tearooms and antique shops.
Day 1 — Monday 30 March
Ashbourne → Windermere · ~2 hour drive
ARRIVE & EXPLORE
  • 🚗
Drive to Low Wood Bay ~2 hours via M6 then A591. Aim to arrive for lunchtime to make the most of the afternoon.
  • Low Wood Bay Watersports Centre Right on-site — kayaks, paddleboards, rowing boats. Let the kids burn off energy on the lake after the drive. Check at reception — watersports access often included for guests
  • 🍽️
Evening: Bowness-on-Windermere Stroll the lakefront promenade, ice cream on the pier. Try Hole in t' Wall (oldest pub in Windermere) or Porto for dinner.
Day 2 — Tuesday 31 March
Windermere · Full day
BIKES & FOREST ADVENTURE
  • 🚲
Grizedale Forest — Family Bike Trails Hire bikes from Grizedale Mountain Bikes (15 min drive). Green and blue trails through beautiful woodland with sculpture trail. Perfect for Asher and Matilda. Pre-book online: grizedalemountainbikes.co.uk
  • 🌲
Go Ape Grizedale Treetop adventure course. The Treetop Adventure is suitable for ages 6+ — Matilda just qualifies! Asher will love the zip lines. Pre-book essential for Easter: goape.co.uk
  • 🏘️
Afternoon: Hawkshead Village Gorgeous historic village 10 min from Grizedale. Narrow lanes, whitewashed cottages, Beatrix Potter Gallery (National Trust). The kids will love the old school where Wordsworth carved his name into his desk!
Day 3 — Wednesday 1 April
Windermere · Full day
HISTORIC AMBLESIDE & LAKE DAY
  • 🏛️
Morning: Ambleside Beautiful stone-built market town. See the famous Bridge House (tiny house built on a bridge!), browse indie shops. Coffee at Chesters by the River.
  • 🎯
Brockhole on Windermere Free National Park visitor centre with adventure playground, tree-top nets, mini golf, and lake access. Brilliant half-day for the kids.
  • 🚢
Windermere Lake Cruise Yellow Cruise from Bowness — about 45 min round trip with stunning mountain views from the water.
Day 4 — Thursday 2 April
Windermere → Bassenthwaite · ~50 min drive
TRAVEL & KESWICK TOWN
  • 🚗
Drive to Ravenstone Manor ~50 min via A591 through the heart of the Lakes. Check in from 2:30pm.
  • 🏘️
Afternoon: Explore Keswick Classic Lake District market town — the Moot Hall, cobbled streets, amazing outdoors shops. Walk down to Friars Crag on Derwentwater for one of the best views in the Lakes.
  • 🧩
Puzzling Place Optical illusions and anti-gravity rooms — Asher and Matilda will absolutely love this. Budget about 1 hour. No booking needed. Open daily. Around £5-6 per person
  • 🍽️
Dinner at Ravenstone Manor The hotel restaurant serves excellent locally sourced food in a relaxed setting. Breakfast included each morning too.
Day 5 — Friday 3 April
Bassenthwaite · Full day
WILDLIFE & FOREST
  • 🦁
Lake District Wildlife Park Minutes from Ravenstone — 24 acres, 100+ species, bird of prey flying displays, keeper talks, reptile encounters, indoor & outdoor play areas. PAW Patrol rides for Matilda! Open 10am-4pm. Family ticket ~£52. No booking needed
  • 🌲
Whinlatter Forest Park England's only true mountain forest — 15 min drive. Family walking trails, WildPlay trail, and Go Ape Junior (ages 6+). Mountain bike hire available too.
  • 🐿️
Red Squirrel Spotting Whinlatter is one of the best places in England to see red squirrels. There are viewing hides with cameras — the kids will be thrilled.
Day 6 — Saturday 4 April
Buttermere · Full day · ~25 min from Ravenstone
BUTTERMERE NATIONAL PARK
  • 🏞️
Buttermere Lake Circuit One of the most beautiful walks in the Lake District — a flat, circular route around the lake (~4.5 miles). Crystal-clear water, dramatic fells on all sides, and a tunnel carved through rock. Very manageable for Matilda and a proper adventure for Asher. Allow 2–3 hours. Start from the village car park (arrives early — fills fast in holidays)
  • 💧
Scale Force Waterfall The tallest waterfall in the Lake District at 52 metres — a short detour from the lake circuit through woodland. The kids will love the dramatic gorge and spray at the base. Add ~40 min for the detour from the lake path. Can be slippery — good shoes essential
  • 🚗
Honister Pass Scenic Drive Drive back via the dramatic Honister Pass — one of England's steepest roads with jaw-dropping views. Stop at Honister Slate Mine for a look around (mine tours available but may be intense for Matilda).
  • 🏊
Langstrath Valley Wild Swimming Pool A hidden gem in Borrowdale — a deep natural pool fed by waterfalls, tucked into Langstrath Valley. About 2.5 miles walk from the village of Stonethwaite. The waterfalls flowing into the pool make for stunning photos. Water will be icy in early April — even a paddle and a picnic by the pool is worth the walk. Stonethwaite is on the Borrowdale road between Honister and Keswick. Bring towels & warm layers. Leave no trace!
  • 🍽️
Lunch at The Bridge Hotel or Croft House Farm Café Buttermere village has two great options — The Bridge Hotel for a proper pub lunch, or Croft House Farm Café for homemade cakes and ice cream by the lake. Both family-friendly.
  • ⛰️
Catbells Walk (alternative / if energy left) If you still have legs, Catbells is nearby — the most famous family fell in the Lakes. Only 1.5 miles to summit with stunning 360° views over Derwentwater. Asher will race ahead! Can do this instead of the full lake circuit if you want a summit day
Day 7 — Sunday 5 April
Bassenthwaite → Ullswater · ~40 min drive
ULLSWATER STEAMER & VILLAGE
  • 🚗
Drive to Tethera Villa ~40 min via A66. Check-in from 4pm — keys in lockbox (host will send details).
  • 🚢
Ullswater Steamer Heritage steamers running Pooley Bridge to Glenridding. Take the full loop or hop on/off. England's most beautiful lake. Kids get discounted fares. Pre-book: ullswater-steamers.co.uk — Easter timetable runs frequently
  • 🏘️
Pooley Bridge Village Charming village at the north end of Ullswater. Stone bridge, tea rooms, ice cream by the water. Perfect Sunday afternoon stroll.
Day 8 — Monday 6 April
Ullswater · Full day
WATERFALL & HISTORIC PENRITH
  • 💧
Aira Force Waterfall Spectacular 20m waterfall in a wooded gorge, 10 min from Tethera. Easy circular walk (about 1 hour). Spot red squirrels in the woods. The viewing bridge above the falls is incredible. NT car park £5 (free for members). Go early to avoid Easter crowds
  • 🏰
Afternoon: Penrith Historic market town 20 min away. Penrith Castle ruins (free, open air — kids can explore!), 14th-century clock tower, great independent shops and cafes.
  • 🎬
Rheged Centre Just outside Penrith — built into a hillside. Giant 3D cinema, art exhibitions, play area, and excellent cafe. Good for a rainy hour.
Day 9 — Tuesday 7 April
Ullswater · Last full day
MAKE IT COUNT
  • 🏄
Ullswater Paddleboarding / Kayaking Hire from Another Place Watersports or Ullswater Outdoor Adventures. Flat morning water on Ullswater is perfect for SUP. Family sessions available.
  • ⛰️
Hallin Fell Walk Short, steep but very rewarding — only 20 min to the top. Jaw-dropping panoramic views over Ullswater. Starts from St Peter's Church. Perfect for all ages.
  • 🍳
Evening: Cook in at Tethera Last night treat — grab local ingredients from Penrith Sainsbury's or the farm shops along A592 and cook a family feast in your eco-luxury kitchen.
Day 10 — Wednesday 8 April
Ullswater → Reading · ~4.5 hour drive
HEAD HOME
  • 🚗
Check out by 10am, drive home ~280 miles via M6, M1, M40. Stop at Tebay Services for lunch — it's a proper farm shop and cafe, not your usual motorway services. The only independent services in the UK — worth the stop!
